Name from OS Map.

1942 aerial photography of the area shows that the current site of th QuinetiQ base was occupied by 5 long (probably nissen) huts at right angles to the shore line. The big surprise was that the whole area of woodland behind this had dozens of huts amongst the trees. I assume it was some kind of accomodation camp.

We do not seem to have a page that this information belongs on.

Has anyone visited this old wartime airfield recently?

The reason I ask is because I've received conflicting comments about the control tower, and some anonymous pics claiming to be from this year.

The tower was earlier reported to have been demolished back in 2006, from a reliable source, but this was soon followed by an anonymous comment that this was wrong, and that it was still standing.

I've since some across another historic site which reports the tower as demolished since 2006, and been provided with a pic which claims to have captured the standing building this year, 2008.

Anyone have a definitive ruling, and been there in recent times?

Kinnaird House, Larbert, Stirlingshire.

Stationed at Kinnaird House were around two hundred Polish soldiers as well as fifty Polish officers. Overall in command was General Stanislaw Maczek - Kinnaird House was his main Headquarters, and is described as the headquarters of the Polish Army in Scotland.

Find also more info here http://members.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=joeandmorag

I suggest you use that address rather than the one given within the eBay page, it will spare you the irritation of the military music on the badly designed site which has no immediately obvious MUTE button to silence the din. Fine the first time, but why the site designer should think visitors would want to have the same (long) piece of music blaring at them on EVERY visit is very poor design without an immediately usable mute. Maybe a web site from someone called CheapWebPresence is not the best idea. Shame - the content is wasted by the unstoppable music, and inability to toggle it off on later visits - not everyone has a volume knob and has to click and find the Windows volume control.

The Campbeltown Courier informs us in its latest issue that the RAF Station at Machrihabish will soon be up for sale. It informs us further that:

The site itself covers a massive 1,028 acres and is home to the longest runway in Europe which stretches for 3km and with it comes hangers, jet fuel installations, offices, lots of living accommodation, sports facilities and numerous other buildings.

There then is a great opportunity for any would-be wheeler-dealers among you. It's a beautiful stretch of wind-swept arable land surrounded , well almost, by high hills.

If you have a little time to spare, you might while away an evening or two having a read through the emergency plans published by Highland Council.

I used to work in some of the plants around the Grangemouth area, and they used to have rows of massive volumes with emergency and contingency plans. Intriguingly, and remember I'm not analysing the ultimate effects here - just the plans, they seemed to much more drastic in terms of their potential effects and coverage, as the process plants there could have produced huge clouds of noxious, harmful, and potentially fatal (Bhopal? ) chemical products that would have been dispersed over a wide area, spread by the weather, and fuelled by the damage plant until it could be shut down or, in the case of a fire, been extinguished.

But, that's another story, and it's never happened here.

Highland Emergency Planning
