New server, and normal service resumed

Since you're able to read this, you'll know that the forum has returned intact from its period offline while I made a rapid, and abortive, hop to another server before finding and setting up this one - and beating it into submission thanks to the daft move on my part of using the move to make some much needed internal changes.

While the change has no real imapct on the forum, providing its working of course, it might allows some expansion on the Main site as it comes with more space and bandwidth that we've been used to. Time, and my ability to do anything constructive will be the main factors

As a result of changes which must be made with regard to the server, the Forum and the Main Site will go offline as from midnight tonight, September 10.

The basic move will generally take anything up to 48 hours to work its way though the web, but as I don't have everything set up yet this may take longer.

I hope to have things functioning by the weekend, but I can't guarantee this, so if you want to know what is happening, please check the Blog, where I will post any Site Info as and when it is available.

Fingers crossed, and hope I don't make a mess of things, or it may be some time before the Forum and Main Site are seen again.

The forum code has been upgraded to the latest version, but I'm not mentioning any of the changes or tweaks this update brings as I'm not 100% confident that it is as it should be.

I've passed my concerns to alert the writer, and we'll see if there is anything serious amiss, or if it's just some trivial finger slips, with no other implications.

In the meantime, if you spot anything that you don't think is "right", please drop a note here, I'll check it out and pass it on as well.

10.3 upgrade

Hopefully all will be well tonight, after the upgrade of the Forum software to the 10.3 release.

Don't waste your time searching for new toys though, as this was largely a cumulative collection of small bugfixes, not a modification bonanza (shhh)

There's a (note the spaces around ID should be omitted if you want to use this tag - I've added them around ID to prevent it trying to insert a non-existent You Tube video, just to show the format), and [tube]URL[/tube] tag added. You'll have to work this one out for yourself - that's all the info I have at the moment, and You Tube isn't something that excites me yet.

It seems that large images are now also automatically resized, preventing the need to commit the sin of horizontal scrolling arising if they are posted.

Images now show a Pointing Hand when the mouse is over them. Clicking the image will take you to a page showing the full-size version, clicking this full-size image will return you to the original thread. See it in action on the Lancaster Bomber pic from Trafalgar Square...

http://secretscotland.org.uk/cgi-bin/forum/Blah.pl?m-1178752305/s-5/highlight-lancaster/#num5

Server outage Wed Sep 12, 2007

Looks like we lost our server for about 10 hours today - a total loss, including everyone else I know that lives in the same place - from around 11:00 to 20:00.

I'd give details, but there usually aren't any, and I'm not going to hassle anyone for them. This one has never displayed the dreadful '10-minutes-to-serve-a-page' malaise the other did, so a few hours is neither here nor there.

Later edit...
The host clock also seems to have haywire at some point. meaning that 'new' posts that should have appeared as 'Recent Post' don't, with the result they never get listed as such.

That's something I can't go and alter, so if you have a thread you are interested in, and it looks dead as there are no recent posts reported, go in and check it yourself, as an incorrect time stamp may be the reason that recent posts made at the time were not properly classified (and never will, since the time is stamped into the message, it won't self-correct).

Later Still edit...
The last 'Spuriously Time Stamped' edit seems to be marked September 13, 2007, 11:07am.

I'm hoping that once we pass that in 'Real Time' all the postings made after that 'Fantasy Time' will appear in the Recent Postings list, and things return to what passes for normality. They should, as I think those made earlier have started to appear as Real Time catches up with Fantasy Time, if you see what I mean (think)

AND, an even later edit...
Well past 11:07, and the offenders are still offending. As fixing the time stamps is not a practical proposition, and their order is still based on some sort of Whovian Universal Timing, I've been forced to delete any mis-timed postings with trivial content (and offer my apologies), and reposted a few of the simpler ones as quotes in the following message, if it was easily done.

I think I've brought things on to an even keel, but don't really want to spend any more time fiddling with it, so hope things are near enough ok.

If you spot anything wrong, post a note, and I'll exterminate it (or try and fix if it's important).

Problems Solved

As per the last message, it would appear that the partial failure of some Forum sections was indeed down to corruptions arising when the Host moved us, so we were lucky they occurred in seldom used areas. Still unusual to see it happen though, as I have discovered problems elsewhere (not related to SeSco) that this finding has at least confirmed as the probable cause.

The Forum will definitely NOT be closed for maintenance, as the known affected areas have been repaired, and even tested to see that they now work

New Host Problems

I've noticed some error messages being generated in the Forum tonight, and while they're not indicative of a Forum problem as such, they will need to be addressed.

Obviously. we've been fortunate in the sense they don't affect day to day operation, only (so far) Member details, but it's not clear which files were affected.

My guess, from the detail of the error messages, is that it has nothing to do with the Forum core, but is a side effect of the Hosting move forced on us a few weeks ago, and file operations carried out by the Host.

That means it's easy to fix, unfortunately, other than a file failing when it's run, there's nothing to indicate which files were affected, so I may have to put the forum down for a while at some point, but will not do so unless it's needed, but I thought I should mention it, just in case. With any luck, you'll see nothing at all, and this will pass you by with no evidence at all, and you can forget all about it, and wonder why I bothered mentioning it at all.

I just thought I should, in case you have got an error message recently, and wondered if it was being dealt with (it is).

New Host

As you may have noticed, there are some anomalies appearing.

Unfortunately, our host has been forced to change servers. As some of you also noticed, the return of requested pages was becoming increasingly erratic in the past days and weeks.

This process can take some 24 to 48 hours to propagate across the web, so during that time, saved information may be deposited in the old server, rather than new.

As my mail server was also being upgraded, and offline for nearly two days, I only got the warning about this change taking place after it had started. As it requires me to redirect service for this site, the process has probably been further extended.

As you're reporting forum messages wandering, and those reports themselves are not disappearing, it's probably safe to assume that the process is complete.

Afraid if its gone, its gone, and that applies to those of us who've been adding content to the Main Site.

And, yes, had my email been online, I'd have posted a warning here to stop us posting in advance.

10.2.5 update

An irritating morning after deciding to slip this minor revision into place - everything fell apart!

NOT the forum software's fault or problem, I hasten to add.

For some reason, I've always had problems with FTP, regardless of what software I used, and today was one to forget in this respect. Although the update seemed to have gone fine, as I poked around, certain parts of the the forum just weren't working, and the messages said the wrong was there, or it wasn't there at all.

Sure enough, the 'voices' were right, and the FTP process was in fact falling about all over the place. Transferred files were empty, or were found to be the old version - even though the FTP claimed to have sent the new ones.

I've done the new file transfers manually, largely by hand, and all the previously 'broken' bits are now working, but if you have a problem somewhere, drop a note in the main forum help area, and I'll see to it.

I've changed the default theme to one of the standard offerings that comes with the forum.

Primarily, this is to get access to the new code that is written into the template and css files, but it's also a bit of a motivator for me to get in there sometime and customise to my own liking sooner rather than later.

If you see, or think, anything looks horrible, or is difficult to read at any point, then do drop a note in the Forum thread.
