HMS Fox III

You seem to like having problems to solve. I am trying to build a view of my father's war service record as a member of No 12 Commandos during 1942/43. He was killed in action June 10th 44. I have several letters and postcards which give me dates and places, but I have come to a dead end with a letter sent from HMS Fox III with no date. I have found references to HMS Fox as a naval base in Lerwick - No 12 Cdo were involved in several operations to Norway, but I have drawn a blank with 'Fox III'. Can you help? Has this been lost or just forgotten, or was it a secret reference to yet another commando training area in Scotland?

Since my last appeal for a little inspiration was such and overwhelming success (The great big category debate, for the Main Site) I thought I'd try another one

Since I've recently found myself coming up with some subjects that don't seem to fall into any of the existing categories in the forum boards, I was thinking that it might be time to open things up a bit with some new ones, however, I'm not to sure what might be wanted.

Rather than influence things by dropping any hints about what I'd been pondering over, I'm just raising the idea here in the hope that there might be some subject that have been causing others the same sort of quandary, where they've had something in mind, but just can't fond a slot to drop it into.

No promises that anything will be included, but on the other hand, if it's never suggested, then it's a dead cert it won't be included.

I had to have a fiddle about with the appearance of the Forum - the calm baby blue of what colour there was in the default was beginning to get to me, and not inspiring.

Since the old grey was too, well, er, um, grey, I decided to lift some of the formatting from the Blog scheme. I quite like its cool (as in colour temperature NOT as in YoofSpeak 'kewl') appearance, and it seems to work without obscuring any text, or doing any real damage to readability (I don't pander to impaired activists, but I do care about anyone that may be impaired, and don't make anything intentionally awkward). There's also the small, but highly relevant aspect that I can tweak the Forum to match the Blog, but not vice versa.

I think it's largely acceptable, I don't want to do too much fiddling, with a view to future upgrades, so there's only likely to be minor pottering around any details that pop up with odd appearances later on.

If anything is problematic, unreadable, invisible or whatever, do drop a note to alert.

As you just might have notices, things went a wandering sometime on Sunday night - not just us, but everything hosted from the same place.

Took almost a whole 24 hours (<23 by my clock), but the hosting company has restored all to its previous state, while I don't particularly want to see failure, I do like to see thinks restored to "as was" condition. It's a pretty fair reflection of their capabilities.

In this case, I noted that not only was the data intact as per the time of the crash (because I was working on live content when it went), when the site came back up, I was still logged in correctly, which I hadn't really expected.

You may want to use BOTH of the options provided for discovering what posts have been made in the Forums since you were last present (I'm not counting "Last visit unread" as it already shows a restricted listing):

Recent posts

AND

All unread

The reason being that the first, Recent posts, appears to have a pre-defined cut-off period, after which it doesn't consider a post/thread to be recent, therefore it's not shown, and you'll never know you never saw it.

All unread however, should show those you haven't looked at, unless you click one of the various "Mark as read" buttons dotted around the place.

I've asked for clarification of the period, if there is one. Can't see it being a bug as there are some huge forums using this software, so the point would have been raised - and that's probably why a limit would be imposed to, or the list could be extremely long.
