This marker is on a promontory on the east side of Loch Striven at:-

(:gma-point lat=55.9449464 lon=-5.0663710 :)
(:mlat:55.9449464:)(:mlon:-5.0663710:)(:mngr6:NS086766:)
(:gma-map :)

I have no idea what it relates to.  It appears to have been recently re-erected.

Hmm. Normally there'd be another marker nearby (with triangle inverted) and they're used as transit markers

I'm not even going to attempt an ascii art version

hmm - that lat/lon ties up with an old notices to mariners tho...

Experimental areas in Loch Striven (55° 55′·0N.,
5° 04′·0W.) and Loch Goil (56° 08′·5N., 4° 53′·5W.
and 56° 09′·4N., 4° 54′·0W.); vessels should keep
clear of these areas which may contain unlit
mooring buoys joined by wire

Transit markers are crosses from the ones we have listed so far, using a ^ and V rather than a full triangle - and forming a cross when aligned at the transit point.

A solid triangle suggests something more like a warning marker, and I'm guessing the attached gizmo is a red beacon to go with what looks like a red triangle.

Warning of the connecting wire perhaps? Maybe re-instated for the sake of the vessels floating around the POL depot?

The old notice is possibly more interesting...

We've tripped over quite a few experintal areas around the Clyde, some in use, some not, but this one seems to be new to us.

I'll try and get round to converting those ancient Incan co-ordinates into something useful later, and try plotting to see what area is covered.

Are there any more details, before we launch off into a search?

In my sailing days there was indeed a small area closed off by 4 buoys and chains but it was further south and closer to the western shore.

Come to think about it there was one in Loch Fyne north of Tarbert as well.

I did look for corresponding signs but saw nothing.  Clearly an earlier sign was mounted on quite a substantial wooden post.

There used to be two banks of floodlights on poles on the South side of Loch Fyne.  I presumed they could be easily seen through a periscope and were something to do with the ARL site.  Not sure if they are still there.

Sorry jmb, but Ihave only just found this message.  I assume you refer to the leading lights for the Loch Fyne Sound Range.  I can confirm that they were there a few months ago when I photographed them and I assume they are still there.   I have  been trying to track down the exact site of the northern set.

We used to go past the Southern set occasionally at work, I am sure I spotted something North of there once but can't remember where.

They are supposed to be on the point NE of Inveraray but I haven't managed to locate them yet to photograph them.
