1987 but it should be noted that the shed housing the museum is 20th. century, the excavations revealing the pig ironworks is exposed between that and the canal.
Summerlee Heritage Park opened in 1987, but I didn't first visit it until 1988 - don't know why it took so long, but suspect I was just to busy with other things on my mind then.
Although it is now, and was earlier, a free admission museum and attraction, there was a period when an admission charge was levied, and from my visits, numbers tumbled when it was introduced. After all, having been able to fall in the door anytime for a look at what is happening is one thing. Having to dip in for a few pounds just for a look makes a heck of a difference if you're not made of money, and a nightmare for a family or group.
Here's a search that comes up with quite a few past pics from the "old" Summerlee, so you can memorise and compare on the next visit to the "new" Summerlee:
I keep forgetting that the Bird's Eye view on Multimap and Live Search can pop up the most unexpected spots, and Summerlee turns out to be one of the gems.
