I wangled a guided tour of this ship when she was arming up at Glen Mallin wharf before going to Gulf waters in the Autumn of 2003. Here is a pic of my son on the flight deck - he was 9 then - he's now a strapping big boy 5'-11 & half ins. tall, boy did he enjoy the day.

Lucky so and sos.

Not likely to be repeated, as even your bog standard Clyde coastal resort ferry terminal is scheduled to go behind a 3 metre steel plate fence with 3 rows of barbed wire along the top as part of the new anti-terror regulations being enforced by the transport side of the government.

Like the little sports cars parked at the far end of the deck

These sports cars ?

The tour only happened because I gave a sailor a lift from Finnart one Friday [they all head for Helensburgh for a pint] and he happened to be a flight deck officer and was on duty the next day, so he fixed it. Security was tight, we were met at the top of the gangway by 2 female ratings armed with sub-machine guns and bumped into a few armed sentries on various decks.

That's the one's

I was just reading the "local" news, and there's already a response to the siting of Alcatraz in Rothesay...
Quoted Text
THE construction of Rothesay pier's brand new prison-esque security fence has been put on hold - for a short while at least - pending the outcome of talks between senior Argyll and Bute Council officials and elected councillors on the subject.

The hold-up comes after a combination of incredulity and outrage greeted our story last week that the council planned to put up an eight foot high steel barrier fence along the length of the pier, with three strands of barbed wire along the top.
