Sad to say, I missed this week's Time Team on Channel 4:

Blitzkrieg on Shooters Hill
C4 Sunday 10 February 5.45pm
Time Team seeks out what's left of second world war defences against invasion in suburban south London.

It would have been interesting to see what they came up with.

That said, they're not true experts, and it seems that our friends at the Pillbox Study Group were able to poke one or two holes in their findings, so it's always as well to remember that Time Team is TV Archaeology. That's not to knock them, merely recognising that they can't be experts in all the disciplines that they unearth in the course of each series.

Here's the link to the Channel 4 Forum relating to this particular programme, where a number of threads have opened regarding Shooter's Hill:

Having read the Forum postings though, maybe I didn't miss too much

As a regular viewer of Time Team I was a bit disappointed with the program. I formed the impression that they were just palying at it and that the archaeologists really had little interest in it.  No mention of AA defences although the excavation of an area round a  spigot mortar was quite intersting.

The big find of the show was accidental and comprised a 2 room bunker in someone's garden.  It had many period electrical bits and bobs still in situ.  No one knew what it was for but they hypothesised that it might have been a communications bunker for Auxilery Units.  Worth watching it when it is repeated just for this.

I finally managed to catch a repeat of this particular episode, and I'd have to say that I can't find myself in agreement with the fairly harsh criticism which the program received in the associated forum.

I think those voicing their "broad knowledge" chose to forget that the team are not specialist with a background in recent history - and this was actually an aspect that came out quite clearly in the program, as the excavations failed due to the depth of the dig being so shallow and contaminated by recent material, since the target was only decades "deep", as opposed to centuries. And there's always the time limit - they only have three days to do the whole thing from start to finish.

The detail on the good old Spigot Mortar was well founded, as was the "This is junk, let's give it to the Home Guard" demonstration - it really was a vile piece of badly conceived kit. It looks as if a few cases of hand grenades would have been a better bet, and less danger to the users too.

Wonder if there was, or will ever be any follow up on the two roomed bunker. It would be interesting to know if there was any confirmation of the Auxiliary Unit idea, and if there were any similar item found elsewhere as a result of the publicity.
