I happened to come across this site which gives some details of RAF Banff Strike Wing of Coastal Command between 1943 and 1945. It look at the Air Base at Boindie near Banff, Scotland and its crews and sorties flown by the Beaufighters and Mosquito Squadrons based their. The image gallery contains pictures from the camera guns of the aircraft along with some of the ground crews at the time...
(Their copyright notice is worth a quick look, for two points. First is simply that it reads as if whoever was writing it forgot to finish it. Second, it begins with Copyright of all information within..., and if the Copyright Act is clear about ONE thing, it's that INFORMATION can never be copyright. Be tough to write anything about anything if indeed it could be!)
That diversion aside, there are some rather unique images in the Gallery, and the length and detail of the Sortie List is... impressive.
Hmm - interesting stuff indeed, thanks for that link.
Having visited this the airfield, it's well worth a look if you're in the area, there are still legible remains of the sortie details on the painted plasterwork on the walls!
Hi zimbob, nice to 'see' you here - your explorations are well known (better mention Bryag in case he feels left out ).
I saw the Banff visit, and the reconstructions plus rescued material.
Good to see so much recognisable features to be found in the midst of the mess - hope the local councillor never thinks the place is an 'eyesore' to be removed to 'improve' the area.
"More than happy to contribute pics, let me know what you'd like"
Hmm, difficult question to answer, I suppose it is really whatever you have that is relevant to the site.
Do you need any help or advice on how to post links?
Don't be put off by the apparent complexity of the text editing instructions. The basics are much easier than they look. Do not be concerned about bending or breaking anything as Admin is very patient and can restore anything. I know, I have dented a few panels on my way through!! If you make a mistake you will not be subjected to any abusive messages on here.
I suggest that you start with adding pics to pages we already have. 28DL's compression levels are OK although I prefer the full page version that Photobucket produces when left to it's own devices. It is really up to you unless Admin has any contrary views.
It would be really good to have an active member or two in the north as most of the rest of us are in the Clyde area.
Have you guys seen the base further up the road at Spey Bay?, this is where bombers taken off from during WW2 to bomb Germany, its about 12-15 miles further, look for Cullen, then head towards Port Knockie and follow the coast till you see a large inlet its just next to this, there are houses here and and the street names are aircraft related, beufighter road etc, there is still reminats of the base here under the trees and large parts of runways,

Input Spey Bay Into Google Maps, follow B9104 till you get to Beufighter road, follow this road down as it goes through the old base
Hi Big_Baz, thanks for the pointer - we're always on the lookout for new finds.
I'm guessing you haven't seen the Main Site, so it's worth a look.
Containing names like Beaufighter Road, the area was a magnet for us, so you'll find a page for Dallachy Airfield and some pics there.
While Bomber Command had an interest in the airfield, and there is a Strike Wing memorial there, the chances of bombers flying from there to Germany can be dismissed, adding almost 1,000 miles to a round trip that was already limited by bomb load and fuel constraints (not to mention the fact that there were no fighter escorts with a range anything like that - they could only make Germany and back from southern England), compared to flying to Germany from the (English) south coast. Dallachy would have hosted flights attacking targets in Norway, and at sea.
